Design Tips

An effective poster balances text and figures so that it conveys information in a way that is easy to digest and visually appealing.

  • Title: The title of your poster should be in large text, visible from 2+ metres away. Authors and their affiliations are usually written underneath the title in smaller text.
  • Figures/pictures: Figures and pictures should be large and visible from 2+ metres away. Aim for high contrast between figures, pictures, and text, so that everything is easily readable. For example, light text should be on dark backgrounds, and dark text should be on light backgrounds.
  • Text: Text should be kept to a minimum. Each figure or table should have a heading of one or two lines in very large type stating the “take-home” message. Provide additional essential information below in a legend set in 16 point or larger type.
  • Interactive Elements: Although not compulsory, some presenters choose to include interactive elements in their poster presentations. These may include QR codes to references, additional resources, and your contact details, printed handouts of your poster, or other creative ideas.
